~ Luxe Travel: Enriching journeys where privileges meet tailor-made travel ~
On an elegant Rhine River jaunt, historic sites meet eco-initiatives.
From the outside, Marksburg Castle looks like it belongs at Disney World. Perched high on a cliff above Braubach, Germany, the twelfth-century fortress with pale stone walls carries an important distinction: It’s never been conquered.
“That is a rare medieval toilet – a luxury,” our guide told us, opening the door to a small room off the dining hall, where a commode flushed straight into the open air. But the design, albeit convenient, proved to be a security issue. He pointed to a lock on the outside of the washroom door: “This kept invaders from getting into the castle through the toilet.”
One of the dozens of High Medieval castles (built from AD 1000 to 1300) flanking the Rhine River, Marksburg is now a museum with its preserved indoor kitchen (novel for the time) and impressive collection of armor and weapons. It’s also a boon to the local economy and one of the stops on Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ seven-night Rhine River adventure, which explores castle towns and two wine-growing regions. The journey promotes family-owned businesses and heritage sites along the waterway while reducing food waste and employing alternative fuel solutions on board.
Launched last year, the 110-passenger Elisabeth turned my shipmates and I into time travelers, with the boutique riverboat as our time machine. I boarded in Basel, and the farther we sailed, the more castles we saw – more than 40 rose from the 40-mile Loreley Valley, which stretches between Koblenz and Rüdesheim. Here’s what to expect from the magical sailing.
From a cabin aboard Elisabeth, the Rhine unfolds as a moving panorama of castles and river towns.
On Board
Sitting in front of my Signature cabin’s French balcony (or gazing through its floor-to-ceiling windows from my bed), I watched the Rhine Gorge roll by. The cabin’s walk-in closet, a rarity in the river-cruise world, inspired me to unpack within minutes. While my room occupied 253 square feet, Elisabeth’s Royal Suites spread over a whopping 506 square feet. Across cabin classes, all passengers are treated to around-the-clock butler service.
Elisabeth feels opulent but not over the top, with marble bathrooms and dining areas accented with velvet and brass. In the bright lounge, bartenders poured old-fashioneds and Rheingau rieslings. With a cold drink in hand, I gravitated toward the sundeck to castle-spot.
Behind the scenes, Uniworld’s parent company, The Travel Corporation, recently signed the Glasgow Declaration, which holds travel operators accountable for their emissions and environmental impact. Uniworld’s fleet should be operating with zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050; part of that process includes progressively bringing biofuels into use across riverboats and in partner-company buses. The Travel Corporation’s foundation, TreadRight, also funds projects such as Path2Zero, which is working to transition European shipping to net-zero emissions. Uniworld is the only cruise company involved in the Path2Zero program.
But Elisabeth’s sustainability initiatives extend beyond fuel. While the ship serves breakfast and lunch buffet-style, dinners reduce waste through plated courses. Uniworld works with Leanpath, a food-waste manager, to lessen its onboard discards: The company tracks real-time usage data to help chefs plan menus efficiently.
In Port
“Does it say ‘Hotel’ on the side of that castle?” I heard someone ask on the sundeck.
On one bank of the Rhine, we could see France; on the other, Germany. Castles in both countries were once defense fortresses, where dignitaries made alliances. Now, they’re hotels and museums.
Uniworld’s sustainability efforts include supporting destinations along its routes, where local guides lead hikes, bike rides, and walks, such as a tour of Heidelberg’s Church of the Holy Spirit and Heidelberg Castle. The company’s Make Travel Matter experiences help guests put tourism dollars directly into the community, through homegrown cultural experiences offered on more than 70 percent of its cruise itineraries. In southwest Germany’s Palatinate wine region, for example, I joined a drinking-vinegar tour and tasting at the Weinessiggut Doktorenhof estate.
There, owner Georg Wiedemann inoculates his own gewürztraminer, sylvaner, and riesling wines to create complex vinegars for cooking, sipping, and boosting immunity. (My favorite aperitif was his savory and sweet fig-wine vinegar.) His tour and tasting room hark back to the days when monks were master horticulturists, and medieval gardens yielded not only food, but also vinegar-based tonics used as medicine.
The experiences also provided sustenance and scale. In the French town of Kaysersberg-Vignoble, I tasted superb tartes flambées – Alsatian “pizza” with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon. In Strasbourg and Cologne, I stood a block away from enormous cathedrals to fully capture their grandeur on camera. One excursion took us off the Rhine for a tasting at the organic Schloss Vollrads, a fourteenth-century hilltop castle with more than 150 acres dedicated to growing riesling. The winemaker is Fair Choice-certified, thanks to its transparent and fair working conditions.
Returning to the Elisabeth each night, I was reminded that this small-ship cruise on the Rhine – a highway through history – is helping sustain the region’s heritage for future generations of time travelers.
