Airelles Palladio, Italy: The Palazzo Preservation

If Rome is Italy's eternal city, Venice is perhaps its most fragile – a mosaic of stone and water in delicate balance. Comprising four carefully restored historic buildings amid two acres of private gardens on the island of Giudecca, a haven just south of the main Venetian islands, the 45-room Airelles Palladio, opening this April, invests in Venice’s irreplaceable heritage.

The property’s architectural heirlooms – which span a sixteenth-century complex facing the Giudecca Canal – include an aristocratic villa, a former refuge for young women without dowries, and the 1588 Santa Maria della Presentazione church, whose Corinthian pilasters frame Biblical scenes by Francesco Bassano.

Overseeing the design of Airelles’ first property outside of France, Christophe Tollemer lavished guest rooms with Venetian decorative art, including Murano glass, Fortuny chandeliers, and terrazzo floors. Given its island-retreat atmosphere, Airelles Venezia should feel far removed from the buzz of Piazza San Marco, which is just five minutes away by boat.

Fairmont Golden Prague: The Eco-Icon

The 320-room Fairmont Golden Prague opened last April in an iconic 1974 brutalist building designed by Czech architect Karel Filsak. At a time when many design lovers were rediscovering long-neglected brutalism, the project carefully restored the concrete cladding, abstract decorative ceramic tiling, and original stained-glass windows by Czech painter Josef Jira. Because many of the Czech Republic’s brutalist buildings have been demolished, the ambitious revival became a cause for celebration.

Despite the renovation’s light touch, Fairmont found ways to retrofit the building with innovations that meet Green Key environmental standards. Upgrades include green roofs, vertical gardens, heat-recovery systems, and geothermal boreholes, and rainwater is captured for irrigation. Rooftop beehives build urban biodiversity, joining citywide initiatives to cultivate the living landscape. In the coming months, a planned green corridor along Parizska Street will offer a direct – and wonderfully verdant – link between the hotel and the revitalized Vltava river verges.

Cambridge House: The Georgian Revival

Jean-Louis Deniot’s meticulous design has returned an earl’s Palladian-style townhouse to its original 1761 glory – a loving restoration of a once-derelict heritage landmark in London’s Mayfair neighborhood. The property’s summer 2026 opening as the 102-room hotel and social club Cambridge House will mark a return to Georgian glory. A Venetian window illuminates second-floor reception rooms where London society once rubbed shoulders with royalty, the ballroom is reborn as a modern brasserie, and elegant salons will once again host afternoon tea.

Look closely, and you’ll find tributes to the property’s more recent past life as the In and Out naval and military club, whose members included the swashbuckler and spy T. E. Lawrence and the polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott. Spaces that channel that clubby spirit include an elegant fumoir stocked with spirits and cigars, and Major’s Grill, the flagship restaurant with a menu inspired by dishes from classic midcentury London establishments.
